Sept. 2005: ANPED AGM to discuss network strategy focusing on SPAC

This year at ANPED's AGM, working groups will develop strategies drawing on SPAC as cross-cutting framework to improve ANPED's more issue-specific campaigns and projects. Also, the SPAC Working Group will develop its strategy and plan for 2006..

Sept. 2005: ANPED members attend 2nd International Experts Meeting on 10-Year Framework on SCP

San Jose, Costa Rica. ANPED members Sylvia Lorek (German Forum) and Veena Ramani (Citizens Netowrk and ISF) join governmental delegates from Europe, North America, Latin America, Africa and Asia this week to discuss progress on the UN's 10-year framework to promote SPAC initiatives. This meeting represents the culumination of a series of regional consultations on implementing SPAC actions called for during the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development. On Monday ISF will deliver North American civi society statement (see Member News.)

Mar. 2005: European Consumer Day: European Economic and Social Committee


The European Economic and Social Committee is kind of a fourth pillar of the European Union (beside Commission, Parliament and Council). Representatives from all stakeholder groups are delegated into the Committee on a regional balance. www.esc.eu.int

The ESC celebrates the European Consumer Day every year at the 15th of March. This year it was devoted to the topic of sustainable consumption. ANPED was invited to give a speech. The conference dealt with the question if and how sustainable consumption is compatible with economic growth, talked about sustainable products and services and the role of retail sector and asked if sustainable consumption is a real choice for consumers.

Mar. 2005: Workshop on MEAs & Private Investment

ANPED has received an invitation to a workshop titled "Multilateral Environmental Agreements and Private Investment: Promoting business contributions to addressing global environmental problems". The workshop will be organized by the Finnish Environmental Institute on June 16-17 2005.
Working group members who are interested in attending the workshop, or providing input to the same should contact Sylvia Lorek.

Mar. 2005: ManVis Project: Demand Perspective workshop

The Manufacturing Vision Project deals with foresights and scenarios of future (European) manufacturing industry. To back the mostly industrial and financial approaches of participating industry and research representatives a workshop was held inviting representatives from the demand side. Delegates came from consumer and environmental organizations, youth and students groups, disabled associations and trade unions. They presented and discussed their expectations for future production and products. The results made will feed into the project that finally shall influence the design of the next research program of the European Union.

Mar. 2005: Synergizing sustainable consumption and competitiveness

The meeting brought together about 20 participants form Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations as well as business. In an open manner it was discussed (1) what is needed to achieve sustainable consumption (technological improvements, efficiency but also more fundamental societal changes) (2) which benefits sustainability strategies can bring for enhanced competitiveness and more practical (3) what to do to integrate sustainable consumption and its underlying elements into ongoing EU policies.

Jan. 2005: Exploring necessities and opportunities for a CEE-specific network on sustainable consumption issues

The Association of Conscious Consumers, Hungary, hosted a two days consultation to explore whether and how Central and Eastern European NGO’s working on sustainable consumption issues could do this in a better and more coordinated way. A short report is available here.

Jan. 2005: New policy papers and country reports available

Members of the SPAC WG have drafted a variety of policy papers and country reports focused on sustainable production and consumption. These are available on the Resources Page.

Dec. 2004: European SCP Meeting: Report and Documents

The report of the European Stakeholder meeting on sustainable consumption and production is available here . Other information about the meeting,  including background documents is available here .

Dec. 2004: Country reports on SPAC

The SPAC WG coordinator has called on members to prepare country reports on sustainable production and consumption. Reports that are submitted by the end of the year will receive 100 € as compensation.
