PREPARATIONS FOR CSD -12

At the 1st meeting of the CSD - 12 Bureau (Bureau of the 12th Session of the Commission on Sustainable Development), participants laid down opportunities for Major Group representatives to present their views. Major groups should use these points of intervention, which occur at national, regional and international levels, to make known their positions on Sustainable Production and Consumption in general or in relation to Water, Sanitation and Human Settlements in particular to the Bureau.

Inputs to CSD - 12 Reports

The CSD Secretariat has called for Major Group Input in preparing reports for CSD - 12 on the overall progress in implementing Agenda 21, the Programme for Further Implementation of Agenda 21 and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation, as well as a more specific review of progress achieved in the implementation of the thematic clusters of Water, Sanitation, and Human Settlements. October 31st 2003 is the deadline for providing inputs for the Secretary General's State of Implementation reports. 15th February 2004 is the deadline for providing inputs for a report dedicated to Major Group views about overall progress on all areas as well as thematic areas of water, sanitation, and human settlements.

Regional Implementation Meetings

In it's 1 st meeting, the CSD - 12 Bureau stated that five regional implementation meetings were being held between October 2003 and January 2004 in conjunction with the plans of the Regional Commissions. These meetings would include provision for Major Group participation.

The schedule of meetings is as follows:

Africa: 8 - 13 December 2003 in Ethiopia

Europe: 15 - 16 January 2004 in Geneva

Asia and the Pacific: 22 - 24 October 2003 in Bolivia, 17 - 18 November 2003 in Chile and 20 - 25 November 2003 in Panama

Latin America and the Caribbean: 27 - 28 October 2003 in Thailand

Western Asia: 19 - 21 October 2003 in Egypt

3rd Meeting of the CSD - 12 Bureau

The Bureau plans to meet with representatives of Major Groups in its third meeting, to be held in New York on November 2003.

 

National Reporting for CSD - 12

In order to reduce the burden on countries, the CSD secretariat has suggested that National Focal Points only report new and updated information that has been obtained since the reporting process for WSSD. Major Groups can take this opportunity to work with the National Focal Points in the preparation of a "comprehensive national report".
